Meditation to counter Depression

Our life, from the time of conception up to this moment is riddled with complexities that are either naturally occurring within us or brought about by the circumstances of living. Such circumstances in one way or another may lead us into the mental state of depression. However, this state need not debilitate our functions as an individual simply because what happens inside us can greatly affect how we deal with depression. Mindfulness meditation requires deep introspection about the present situation of thoughts and feelings without being judgmental about them. Liberating the mind from the present, freeing it of any attachment in uncontrollable negative past or future troubles. This deep concentration produces positive outcomes relating to the reduced activity of a particular system in our body. Being under a rather unfavorable condition activates responses in the sympathetic nervous system characterized by our body’s fight or flight response causing emergency hormones to break out to prepare us for any imminent danger. Our body releases a quantifiable amount of the adrenaline hormone epinephrine. This triggers an increased heart rate, our senses become over alert and causes uncomfortable effects in our digestive tract among others.  And as we all know, said excitation of various organs entirely doesn’t connote a beneficial result in our minds. This is where mindfulness meditation proves to be helpful. Our bodies go through the similar condition of being unwell during depression. Mindfulness meditation encourages deep awareness of sad, negative thoughts as they just drift away inside the head without being involved. Practicing this technique over time develops an inner balance within as you are able to take control of any depressive feelings to not take over the better of you. The fact that we cannot prevent certain life instances from happening and threaten our happiness does not necessarily mean we should suffer the consequences. Nobody wants to take part in this negative psychological state. With the growing popularity of mindfulness meditation as a really helpful choice for depression, various scientific minds have been gathering facts, doing research and experiments to satiate our curiosity as to its medical relevance. As supported by tests and research, wonderful benefits promote enhanced functions in the brain which causes increased development of the immune system. Mindfulness changes brain structure which includes thicker brain cells and distinct gray matter concentration which results in an improved sense of well-being, a more positive psychological and cognitive approach and increased processing speed. The future of treating depression with the help of mindfulness meditation poses a vast potential of possibilities about the human system of neurophysiologic processing. As some points discussed are on a somewhat vague level of certainty, more research will be valuable to provide a hardened, solid stance of this great ability in mind conditioning in the context of the medical world.
